GIORGIO LAVELLI, "IDOMENEO"

Speranza

In the midst of the Carnival of Venice, on February 27, "Idomeneo: re di Creta" was performed at LA FENICE.

The performance was of particular interest because this opera is rarely given in Italy.

Since the war there have been only four theatrical productions, and five broadcast or concert performances.

Much interest was also caused by the presence of the producer Giorgio Lavelli, whose customary use of white backdrop and sets was a strong contrast to the colourful carnival masks seen in the streets of Venice and also among the audience.

Against this white scenic background the story of "IDOMENEO" is imaginatively unfolded and the individual characters stood out against the others, who formed a group whose unification was stressed by single costumes which enveloped them.

On the empty stage everything was left to the abilities of the artists, which left much to be desired, although this was not so in the case of Margarita Zimmermann's captivating portrayal of Idamante, and in part for Margherita Rinaldi's well-sung (despite a few difficult moments), but cool Ilia.

But it was especially notable in the leading roles.

Werner Hollweg as Idomeneo shows vocal fatigue and Ruth Falcon in the important part of Electtra was not up to the part.

The conducting of Peter Maag was precise but slow and lacking in vitality.

Only in the superb third act did things pick up and the audience show interest.
